Whether we like it or not, that nervous feeling in the pit of our stomachs when we’re about to do something stressful is a necessary survival mechanism.

Anxiety is our body’s way of telling us to pay attention. When we feel it, we know it’s time to take action. But juggling the amount of anxiety and the many things that might trigger it can sometimes get out of hand, and in some cases even lead to disorders related to our body’s inability to control how it reacts to stress.

A significant percentage of the US population over the age of 18 exhibits some form of anxiety disorder. Pharmaceutical companies have developed several drugs that are meant to treat these disorders, the most popular of which fall under the category of tranquilizers, such as Xanax. These come with a host of side effects that many people suffering from anxiety disorders aren’t capable of living with.

Luckily, CBD has presented itself as a possible alternative method of treatment for anxiety-related disorders.

Several studies have shown positive results from administering acute doses of CBD to patients suffering from anxiety. These ranged from giving social anxiety sufferers dosages of CBD and asking them to engage in a public speaking exercise to scanning the brains of individuals with the same condition who had just taken doses of CBD in order to document the onset of anti-anxiety effects. During the public speaking exercise, participants claimed to feel much lower levels of anxiety, which was backed up by heart rate and blood pressure readings taken during the exercise.

The benefits of CBD as an alternative treatment to the pharmaceuticals is twofold. Not only is a more natural method made available, but patients who didn’t respond favorably to the prescription drugs and their side effects are given another option.
